National 5 Applications Course Information
At Dunfermline High School we will also offer pupils the opportunity to sit the National 5 Applications of Mathematics Course.
Previously known as Lifeskills Maths, National 5 Applications is an alternative to National 5 Maths for students who want to focus on practical, real-life uses of Maths. Pupils will have already covered a number of topics as shown in the diagram below.
As you can see from the diagram, the topics pupils traditionally find challenging at N5 Maths (trigonometry, quadratics and further algebraic manipulation) are not covered in the N5 Applications course, instead more problem solving and real-life applications are studied hence pupils are more likely to achieve a National 5 award.
Should pupils wish to continue with mathematics in S5, our recommendation would be N5 Mathematics and Higher Maths in S6.
National 5 Applications of Maths is a recognised qualification that a number of further education establishments accept. The table below shows careers and university courses which require Mathematics and which can be entered with either qualification.
* Higher Applications is not a pathway offered at Dunfermline High School for the session 2023/24 but will hopefully be available from session 2024/25.
