Homework Policy
Homework is learning which a pupil undertakes out with timetabled lessons.
Well designed homework helps to…
- Consolidate and/or extend classroom learning.
- Develop independent learning and research skills.
- Involve parents in their child’s learning.
- Raise attainment and achievement for all, supporting work to close the attainment gap
When homework is set, this may be:
Best done independently/outside of school
This will support classwork, reinforce or extend learning e.g. carrying out research, completing tasks using information from class lessons.
Finishing off or making up for absence
This may be required to allow for progression through a planned learning experience. Pupils will be supported as required to work independently.
Revision
This will be in relation to assessments or formal examinations/completion of practical folio work. Routine revision of class work is expected by teachers. Senior phase pupils can expect to undertake increased levels in preparation for formal assessments.
Practical Lessons
Within Home Economics it is also the responsibility of every pupil to bring a container for practical lessons. Details of when classes are cooking will be posted on SMHW (Satchel:One) by class teachers so pupils should be fully aware of the requirements. Any pupil who cannot provide a container should see their class teacher prior to the lesson.
Teachers will aim to:
- Ensure all required elements of the course are delivered in school.
- Ensure a clear purpose; only setting tasks which enhance and/or support learning or skills development.
- Support pupils and give guidance to manage homework.
- Communicate success criteria.
- Ensure differentiation to allow for individual needs.
- Allow a week for homework to be done.
- Communicate planned future tasks and due dates in school and/or online via SMHW (Satchel:One).
- Communicate with parents/carers through tracking reports if homework has not been completed in line with expectations.
- Provide support materials if required for the completion of homework tasks.
Pupils should be responsible for:
- Checking SMHW (Satchel:One) for homework deadlines/tasks.
- Asking parents and/or staff for help if there are problems - before deadlines.
- Attending available study clubs as needed.
- Asking class teachers for support if required before the homework is due.
- Meeting homework deadlines.
- Completing tasks to the best of their ability.
Parents/Carers should aim to:
- Support/encourage a homework routine.
- Use tracking reports to engage in conversations with their child about their learning.
- Provide an appropriate environment for homework to be completed.
- Contact the school if there are worries or concerns relating to homework.
